Educational Talent Search Staff

Sue Huizinga   shuizin@boisestate.edu

Sue B. Huizinga is the Project Director for the Educational Talent Search program and Upward Bound programs. She has been director of ETS since 1986 and of UB since 1997. She has been a faculty member for the Council for Opportunities in Education New Directors Institute, a six year board member for the Northwest Association of Special Programs, the NASP spring conference chairperson in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 2001 and 2003.

Sue is a Boise native who graduated from Boise High School, received a BA in Secondary Education from the University of Idaho, and a Masters of Arts in Education from Boise State University.

She is married to Jeff and is the mother of Andrew who is an architecture major at the University of Utah.

Julie M. Bu is the Assistant Director for the ETS Programs, She also serves 10-12 graders at Borah High School as an Educational Specialist. She has worked with students in grades 8th through 12th, at twelve different high schools in the Treasure Valley. She has also been the Upward Bound summer school coordinator and taught Spanish during summer school for 2 years.

Julie grew up in Boise, received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts and a Masters of Arts in Education from Boise State University.

Julie served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, Central America, and as an Educational Trainer. She has also taught an Adult English Language Learners classes, Spanish grades K-12th and University freshman seminar. She lives on the Boise Bench with her husband and three children.

Julie Netz was born and raised in the state of Idaho. She has an associates degree from ITT Business College, and a bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Boise State University. While attending Boise State, she worked for the Educational Talent Search office for six years. After graduating from Boise State, she taught in the Boise School District for nine years, before coming back to work for the TRIO Program, where she has been for approximately one year. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, watercolor painting, and snow skiing. She is presently beginning her masters degree program at Boise State. She continues to volunteer her time for the Boise School District.

Tia Shamin Short   tshort@boisestate.edu

Tia Shamin Short has worked with Educational Talent Search for 17 years with 8th through 12th grade students. Presently she works at Melba Middle & High School and Nampa High School.

Tia graduated from Wood River High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a reading emphasis and a Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction with an ESL emphasis both from Boise State University.

Tia is married and the proud aunt of 3 nieces and 3 nephews. She loves spending time with her family especially at the ocean. She also loves reading and writing.

Dr. Keith Anderson  kanderso@boisestate.edu

Dr. Anderson is an Educational specialist with Educational Talent Search. He has been with the program for over 10 years, serving middle and high school student students from Wilder, Parma, and Horseshoe Bend. For the past 18 years he has been teaching speech communication, as an adjunct instructor for Boise State University.

Keith is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, but lived most of his life in Vallejo, California. He is a graduate of Vallejo Senior High School, Solano Junior College and Boise State University. He attended Utah State University, School of Graduate Studies and University of Idaho, where in May 2006 he received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. Keith is a former scholarship football player for Boise State University. Keith is a published author, now writing his second novel. He is also an accomplished singer, recording CDs and performing live in front both small and large audiences. Keith also does seminars, teacher in-services and lectures on multiculturalism in the classroom and Understanding and Disassembling Racism, throughout the Northwest.

Patty is the Educational Specialist at Fort Boise, Mountain Cove, Parma, Homedale, and Caldwell high schools. Patty has degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a minor in Spanish from Boise State University. Patty hopes to start her master's program in Student Development in Higher Education. Patty is a proud founder of the TRIO Student Association at Boise State University. TSA is a student organization that assists current TRIO students and alumni from Boise State University. Patty was apart of the TRIO Upward Bound program at Caldwell High School.



Jim Wright  jwright@boisestate.edu

Jim Wright is in his tenth year as an Educational Specialist with the Educational Talent Search program. He currently serves students in Borah High School and Capital High School. Jim grew up in Wisconsin, but moved to California where he graduated from high school and college. He received his bachelor's degree and teaching credentials from the University of California, Riverside. He taught junior high and high school math for a total of ten years in California and in the Boise School District.

He has done graduate work in education at California State University in San Bernardino, Boise State University, Northwest Nazarene University, and the University of Idaho. Jim is an on-going presenter at the Boise National College Fair. Jim has four wonderful children: Joshua, Jessica, Alicia, and Brianna.


Kristin Fehrer   KristinFehrer@boisestate.edu

Kristin Fehrer was born and raised in Idaho. Kristin has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice as well as a Master’s degree in Education with a reading emphasis from Boise State University. Kristin has an employment background in a number of different fields including, social work, mental health and criminal justice. After working many varied jobs, Kristin discovered education as her true passion and has been working in the field ever since. She feels that education is the key to a better and brighter future.

Kristin enjoys the outdoors and aspires to be a world traveler. After graduating from college, Kristin spent 6 weeks backpacking around Europe. She has also had the opportunity to travel to the Caribbean twice, and looks forward to many more vacations with her family. Kristin is the proud mother of Cassie and Jackson, and is married to Rob.

Petya Stoyanova-Johnson   PetyastoyanovaJohnson@boisestate.edu

Petya was born and raised in beautiful Bulgaria, a small country in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in International relations and decided to travel and see the world.

She lived in New Orleans for almost two years and moved to Boise after Hurricane Katrina.

Petya worked as a Residential Mentor for UB summer program and absolutely enjoys the interaction with the students. For her two years as a MBA student at BSU, Petya has been an active member of the International Student Association, and the Multilingual Student Advisory Board. Petya also worked as a program coordinator for the BSU Women’s Center, an experience that inspired her to become an advocate for underrepresented student groups. Petya will be an Educational Specialist at Homedale, Parma, and Idaho City.
