The Department of Special Education at Boise State prepares teachers at the pre-service and inservice levels to more effectively serve all students K-12, with special emphasis on those students with disabilities. To this end the Department of Special Education has three specific functions.

The first of these is to enable all students who are preparing to be teachers to better understand, accept, appreciate, and meet the instructional needs of the diverse learners who are part of the general education classrooms of today. To do this, the Special Education faculty offer courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that provide an overview of exceptionality and special education programs to all elementary and secondary education majors.
The second function is to offer structured sequences of coursework in Special Education to students who wish to gain additional knowledge, skills, and expertise in Special Education. These programs culminate in either (a) the Pre-Endorsement in Special Education for Elementary Education majors, or (b) the Certificate in Inclusive Practices for any preservice or inservice teacher.
