Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Is there an application deadline?

The Doctoral Management Committee review complete applications for admission to summer, fall, or spring terms.  Summer application deadline is February 15, Fall deadline is April 15, and Spring deadline is September 15. 

2.  Can I go part-time?

The Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction program reco0mmends that a student be in continous enrollment and complete a minimum of 23 semester credits of graduate level courses during the first 15 months of the program. 

3.  How long does it take to complete the program?

It is possible to complete the basic coursework in a two year period including summers.  The dissertation may take a year or longer beyond that time period. 

4.  Can I transfer courses to the Ed.D. program that were originally counted for my Master’s degree?

Yes.  Students are encouraged to count previous graduate-level courses in their Area of Specialization credit requirements.  Students are encouraged to discuss transfer credits with their advisor. 

5. Are there any limitations on transfer credits (like, how long ago the credits were granted)?

Yes.  A maximum of 21 transfer credits are allowed.  Additionally, transfer credit applied to the Area of Specialization must have been taken within seven calendar years of the time of admission to the Ed.D. program.

6.  How can I financially support myself while in graduate school?

Graduate assistantships are available upon application.  There are also potential adjunct faculty openings.  Students are encouraged to check out the Financial Support link at   http://education.boisestate.edu/cifs/CIdoctoral.htm . 

7.  How do I find an advisor?

Initially the Program Coordinator will recommend an advisor based on your research interests and academic background.  Students may be changed advisors over the course of their study. 

8.  How soon do I need to make a decision about an Area of Specialization? 

Discussion should begin right away with the advisor.  Students are encouraged to take course work in their Area of Specialization in addition to the CIFS doctoral courses each semester.
