Bilingual Education or ESLBachelor of Arts
What is the Bachelor of Arts in Bilingual Education/ESL?This is a regular Bachelor of Arts degree consisting of 130 semester credit hours of coursework at Boise State University. It takes approximately four academic years to complete if you are a fulltime student. This degree is designed to prepare elementary school teachers (K-8th grades); it does not prepare you to teach high school. However, you would be able to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual classes at the high school level. You would not be able to teach classes at the high school level that are not designated bilingual classes. An undergraduate checklist is offered to guide students through a four-year Bachelors of Arts Degree in Bilingual Education. The checklist serves not only as an overview into this program of study, but, also as a record of, state exam scores, class schedules, semester by semester class suggestions, and grades earned. To download the Undergraduate Advising Checklist go to Forms. Where and when are classes held?
Most classes are held on the Boise State University Campus in Boise, although some classes may be
offered at BSU West Campus (Nampa), Canyon County Center (Nampa) or other BSU extension centers.
They are held during the regular semesters and during summer sessions
usually during the morning and afternoon hours.
Also, some classes are taught in the evening to accommodate students who
have daytime jobs. Idaho Standard Elementary CertificateIf you earn a B. A. degree in this program you will qualify for an Idaho Standard Elementary Certificate (K-8) endorsed in Bilingual Education and ESL (K-12). A degree and endorsement in bilingual education does not restrict you to teach only in bilingual/ESL classrooms. You may teach in any elementary classroom, kindergarten through 8th grade. Bilingual EducationTo be a bilingual teacher is to be prepared to teach all content area subjects (mathematics, science, literacy, social studies, etc.) in two languages, Spanish and English, and to teach them in the context of both the Latino and Anglo cultures. In other words, you must be fluent in Spanish and in English. The four major goals of bilingual education are:
English as a Second Language (ESL)The primary purpose of ESL (sometimes referred to as Teaching English Language Learners) is to teach English to the students, enabling them to eventually succeed in schools where English is the language of instruction. It is not designed to maintain students at grade level. The Job MarketAbout 95% of all bilingual education/ESL graduates from the BSU program are hired their first year out of college. Districts such as Nampa, Caldwell, Marsing, Mountain Home, Wilder, Notus, Parma, Ontario, Nyssa, Fruitland, Payette, and New Plymouth, all have large numbers of Latino students who need bilingual instruction in order to succeed. Most bilingual majors are offered teaching contracts even before they complete their student teaching experience. In addition, an Idaho certificate is accepted by every state in the nation. The job market is great! Now is an excellent time to consider earning a degree in Bilingual Education/ESL.
