description: The purpose of this course is
to familiarize students with the concepts of linguistics. The class will be
taught mainly in the inquiry instruction method. Accordingly, students are
encouraged to present not only what they know but also what they do not
understand in the subject matter to be dealt with. The goal of this course is to
make some linguistic concepts easier to grasp. Throughout the 8
three-hour sessions, we’ll
cover mostly the grammatical aspects of
language: 1) phonetics: the sounds of language, 2) phonology: the sound
patterns of language, 3) syntax: the sentence patterns of language 4) semantics:
the meaning of language, 5) morphology: the words of language. The textbook we’ll
use is: An Introduction to Language
